Luke 14:25-27 Now large crowds were traveling with him; and he turned and said to them, “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. (NRSV)

Allow me to explain. Do you believe that a kid from a disadvantaged background should have the same opportunity to enter university as anyone else? I hope so.
But let’s say two students make it into medical, legal, or architectural studies and irrespective of their backgrounds, privileged or underprivileged, one is hardworking and studious, while the other’s lazy, skipping classes, handing assignments in late. Should they both have equality of outcome? I certainly hope not! One of them could be my doctor, lawyer or architect one day.
Greek philosopher Aristotle wrote that: Excellence is never an accident. It’s always the result of high intention, sincere effort and intelligent execution.
I agree, which brings me to the point of talking about Christians, Jesus-followers, disciples – call them what you will. Each one of us has equality of access. Jesus died once and for all. But equality of outcome? Well, let’s hear it from Jesus Himself:
Luke 14:25-27 Now large crowds were traveling with him; and he turned and said to them, “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. (NRSV)
Okay, so he uses some hyperbole there to make His point but His point is impossible to miss:
Whoever doesn’t carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
