Psalm 139:13-18 For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed. How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! I try to count them—they are more than the sand; I come to the end—I am still with you. (NRSV)

Download audio fileIt’s a sad thing when we compare ourselves with others and in our own estimation end up coming up short. I’m not as clever, as fast, as good looking, as successful as the next person. A sad thing, indeed.
It’s not just that these comparisons plunder our emotions, but more than that, they rob us of our enthusiasm, our potential; they curb our natural desire to exercise our God-given gifts and abilities for the benefit of others, and to bring us the sense of fulfillment that God wants us to have. You see it all the time.
So, just in case you ever find yourself in that hole, I believe that God wants to speak to you today through the Psalmist who prayed thus:
(NRSV)
