Matthew 23:27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. (NRSV)

Download audio fileEach of us spends a lot of time each day thinking. Sometimes they’re good thoughts – other times … well, not so much. And our thoughts … well, they say a lot to Jesus about who we are.
One of the things I really love to find in people is that they’re the same person on the outside as they are on the inside, so that I know that what I see, is what I get. I don’t want someone who’s playing games with me. I want to know that they’re for real.
That’s why I don’t mind people who are blunt and direct. I’d much rather know what they’re thinking, than have them saying one thing to my face and another behind my back. I’m sure you’re the same.
But now let’s put the shoe on the other foot because without doubt, when people look at us – you and me – that’s what they want from us too. But is it always what they get?
Jesus once said this to a bunch of the elite religious leaders of His day:
Matthew 23:27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. (NRSV)That’s pretty blunt and direct, don’t you think?
The key thing that comes into play here is our mind; what we do with the old grey matter between our ears – our thoughts, what we think about. You can’t keep thinking bad thoughts about someone and then smile to their face … because eventually you’ll get found out. Eventually, that disconnect between what’s happening on the inside versus the outside will bring you unstuck.
So – what do you spend your time thinking about?
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
