Philippians 2:2-4 In whatever you do, don't let selfishness or pride be your guide. Be humble, and honour others more than yourselves. Don't be interested only in your own life, but care about the lives of others too.

A great quote came through on Twitter the other day from a Dr Tayo Adeyemi in the UK. This is what he said:

You are either a blessing or a burden; an asset or a liability; a problem solver or a problem. Your choice!

And it’s true. We all know people who are an incredible blessing, and others who are a real burden. We all know people who encourage us, who find solutions to our problems, who help us to find a way through the impossible. And on the other hand, we all know people who just, well, to put it bluntly, drain the life out of us. They’re like emotional sinkholes. They never contribute anything to your life, instead, they just suck you dry.

There’s a pretty stark contrast between those two, and I’m sure you can picture at least one of both of those types in your life.

So … here’s the inconvenient question then: which one of those two are you? A blessing or a burden; an asset or a liability; a problem solver or the problem?

Some people only every look out after their own interests – “What’s in it for me?” is the question they ask in pretty much every situation. They’re always taking and rarely giving. Those people are a burden, because it never crossed their mind to be a blessing.

If I were to ask your friends, your family, your work colleagues whether you’re a blessing or a burden, an asset or a liability, a problem solver or the problem … what would they say?

In whatever you do, don’t let selfishness or pride be your guide. Be humble, and honour others more than yourselves. Don’t be interested only in your own life, but care about the lives of others too. (Philippians 2:2-4)

Of course the easiest way to turn that around is simply to start caring for other people more than we do for ourselves. Do you like selfish and prideful people? No, nor do I! So why do we choose to act out of selfishness and pride?

Do you like people who honour you more than they do themselves, who are interested in your life at least as much as they are in their own? Yep, so do I. So why not choose to live your life that way?

Rocket science it ain’t!

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
