As we hurtle towards yet another Christmas in our lives, I wonder, how much thought have you given to the sort of Christmas that you want to celebrate? How much thought have you given to the sort of Christmas that perhaps Jesus would have you celebrate, hmm?

Christmas is always a bit of a contradiction to me. On the one hand, we seem to celebrate it en masse; on a huge global scale. On the other hand though, the message of Christmas is very small, it’s very personal. It’s a message of a tiny baby in a manger in Bethlehem.

It’s kind of weird, and for me it makes getting a handle on Christmas, wrapping my heart around Christmas … a whole bunch harder.

You get out there amongst it, and it seems to be all about getting all the presents for everyone and getting the food for Christmas lunch stuffed into an already over-filled refrigerator and making sure you have the bonbons and … Oh, did I forget anyone? … and all that stuff.

When, at the heart of Christmas is – pardon me for saying so – Christ. Jesus; this God who created the universe, Who in His amazing love and wisdom decided to become a child and be born in a smelly, rough, draughty stable.

Luke 2:7 She gave birth to her first son. She wrapped him up well and laid him in a box where cattle are fed. She put him there because the guest room was full.

It was so ordinary, that first Christmas – so human, so full of the love of God, so intimate, so personal.

Big Christmas, small Christmas … it’s chalk and cheese, isn’t it?

So which one will you be celebrating this year? Which one do you think would Jesus have you celebrate? Big Christmas or small Christmas?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
