The world, life … call it what you will … has an uncanny way of throwing some pretty awful things our way from time to time. Other times, it’s happy days. But through it all, might I ask you how well is it with your soul?

We have some great worship music being written and sung across God’s church today, and that’s awesome. But there’s something special about some of the hymns of old. They run so deep, it seems – like the one written by Horatio Spafford, It is Well With My Soul.

His four-year-old son had died, and the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 ruined him financially. Then came the economic downturn of 1873. So he decided to take his family to England to help DL Moody in his evangelistic campaigns.They were to sail across the Atlantic together, but after a late change of plans, his wife and daughters went on ahead. Tragically their ship sank, and all four daughters perished. Only his wife Anna survived. She sent him the now famous telegram which began, “Saved alone …”Shortly afterward he sailed to England, and was inspired to write these words on the voyage near where his daughters perished.  

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Wow! Those words at such a time can only have come from a deep, deep relationship between that man and His God, the God who today would speak these words to you:

Isaiah 54:10 The mountains may disappear, and the hills may become dust, but my faithful love will never leave you. I will make peace with you, and it will never end.” The LORD who loves you said this.

May it be well with your soul.
