I’m sure that at some point you’ve walked along the beach and seen one of those dry, bleached pieces of driftwood that’s been washed up on the shore. That, sadly, is the picture of many a person’s life … people who lack a sense of purpose, people who drift through life, only to come to the end not having done what they were made to do.
But it’s also true that sometimes people choose the wrong purpose in life. Mine used to be to carve out a successful career, to become wealthy, to be well thought of in my profession. But that wasn’t God’s purpose.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (ESV)
These days, I know my purpose. I know my passion. It’s to take the gift of painting pictures with words – a gift that He’d handcrafted into my DNA from the very beginning – to help people draw close to Jesus so that they can live in victory over their circumstances and over their sin to become all that God made them to be. My life’s purpose is to do exactly what I’m doing right now.
There came a time for me though, to choose between money and success on the one hand and God’s purpose for my life on the other.
Perhaps now is the time for you to choose – your plans or His; a life of purpose or life as that piece of driftwood. Choose. Choose wisely. God has a plan.
That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.

I’m the piece of wood…I’m 49 and still don’t know my purpose in life. It’s not something I’m proud of…I’m empty and stuck.
