It’s an odd thing, but so often I end up speaking with groups of people – people who I’ve never met before. Here at home and in indeed in countries all around the world – all sorts of different places and cultures … even languages.

And I can’t tell you the number of times I walk in, we start speaking and praying together and before you know it … it’s as though we’ve known each other for years. I have a dear friend in Canada – Bob – I met him first in a restaurant in India. He was the director of a ministry in Canada, I was the director of a ministry in Australia.

We’d come from opposite sides of the world. We hadn’t known each other for more than five minutes when someone asked – So how long have you two known each other?

We just … hit it off in an instant. I’m sure you’ve had that experience too, where there’s an instant bond, an instant connection. And you’re left wondering – hang on, how did that happen? Where did that come from?

Well, it’s no coincidence. Jesus said this:

For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them. (Matthew 18:20)

That’s so easy to forget, because we can’t see Jesus in the same way as we can see other people. So we meet, we chat, this instant connection happens, and we write it off to the fact that even if we come from opposite ends of the earth, well, we’re Christians, we’re part of the same tribe, that’s it.

And whilst that’s part of it, it’s not all of it. Because the most powerful part of that connection, is Jesus in our midst. The Spirit of God binding us together, opening our hearts to one another, speaking through one person into the life of another person.

I wonder, who of God’s people do you feel a special connection to? A connection that goes beyond a shared set of values or beliefs. A connection that goes beyond the simple reality of human relationships.

Today, I encourage you to think about those relationships. To thank God for those relationships. To dwell on Jesus’ words:

… where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.

Just two, just three and there, right there, Jesus is in our midst.

The Jesus who created the whole universe. The Jesus who died for you and me on that Cross. What an amazing blessing. Think of the power, the potential of those relationships when you realise that … Jesus is there!

There is something so incredibly special when a few people gather in His name. He is in our midst, He opens up hearts and builds relationships in just the most supernatural way.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
