Download audio fileIf you’d used this ubiquitous term “the selfie” back when I was growing up, people would have stared at you blankly wondering what in the blazes you were talking about.
Facebook, Instagram, Snap this and Tok that … are flooded with billions – yes, quite literally billions – of “selfies”. If my grandmother were still alive today, she’d be wondering to herself “Why are they doing that?” Now that, as things turn out, is a very good question. Why are people doing that, do you think?
Of course, mobile technology has made it all possible but it’s not the fault of the technology. Technology has simply enabled us to put a new spin on the age-old mindset that “I am at the centre of the universe” – enabled I think, but also reinforced. I marvel at the technological capability resting in the palm of my hand, but it hasn’t all been for the good of humanity … for the good of you and me.
The more it goes on, the more it reinforces our self-centredness. Look … is taking a photo of yourself and posting it on social media bad, in and of itself? Not really. What’s bad is the culture of self-centredness that it propagates on a mass, global scale.
Christians … we’re called to be countercultural.
1 Corinthians 10:24 Try to do what is good for others, not just what is good for yourselves.
That doesn’t quite fit the pervading selfie-culture, does it?
Can I ask you something? To what extent has selfie-culture hijacked your faith in Jesus, your desire to make Him Lord of your life, your passion in loving and serving others in His name in a sacrificial way?
Try to do what is good for others, not just what is good for yourselves.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
