Just in my lifetime, the options we have available to us of good things to spend our hard-earned cash on, seem to have increased a hundredfold. Travel, entertainment, technology … maybe that’s why so many people are in so much debt.

I remember when I was a young lad, I’d often ask my parents for a second helping of dinner, and if there was more available my mother would normally put a bit more on my plate.

But then, half the time, I couldn’t get through the second helping so my father would peer across the table at me and say, “Your eyes were bigger than your stomach, son.”

But this is not just a problem confined to children.

This world seems to offer so much that we start chasing after its rewards with all that we are. More stuff … more and more and more. The problem is, you need money to fuel that sort of greed and over-indulgence – more money than most of us have.

So then, you start doing things that are just a bit borderline to get the money. You push the envelope … and before you know it, you’re living the life of an addict. You’re getting the money however you can, so that you can get your next fix … of stuff.

So here’s a bit of wisdom for anyone with a maxed-out credit card today:

Proverbs 16:8 Better is a little with righteousness than large income with injustice. (ESV)

At the end of the day, the things you have to do to feed your greed just aren’t worth it. The price is one that’s not worth paying.

I know that there are so many good things out there that you may want more. But … don’t let your eyes be bigger than your stomach.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
