I mean, it’s a natural thing to do … but when you think about it, seriously, it just doesn’t make sense – we’re all so different, and actually, that’s the way it’s meant to be.
We all like to receive gifts; for our birthday, at Christmas time … who doesn’t like to unwrap a present and get a pleasant surprise? But if only we realised the abundance of the gifts that God’s already given us.
You know how it goes. You compare yourself to other people, and invariably in your own mind you find yourself coming up short. Everybody else seems to be smarter, better looking, more articulate, more successful, better off than you. So it’s all too easy to come to the conclusion that you don’t have the smarts or the blessings or whatever that other people seem to have.
There’s rather a good quote going around that goes something like this: Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.
Your gifts, your abilities, are the sovereign choice of God, woven into your DNA at conception and refined through all the ups and downs you’ve travelled through thus far.
1 Peter 4:10 God has shown you his grace in many different ways. So be good servants and use whatever gift he has given you in a way that will best serve each other.
Just think about that for a minute. Your gifts, your abilities, were poured out on you by His grace. And what does He want you to do with them? Well, obviously He wants you to give them away, again and again and again. So, come on … get on with it, would you please?
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
